In the mean time…

27 08 2010

Last night a few friends and I went for some Deadmines runs. Oh, how the memories came flooding back. It’s been a long time since I was a little Alliance noob running around Westfall killing Defias bastards that dared to stand in my way. But now as I am leveling with my friend Valtanis, we are mixing dungeon runs with PvP and some questing. It’s been fun so far. He hasn’t really seen a lot of the zones that the Alliance spend a good chunk of their time in, so it’s fun to watch him see new things. And with both of us playing a new class, every level is exciting.

The hard thing is that he is decked out in full BOA gear. For those of you who don’t know what that is, well, L2BOA! C’mon now! So even though we are raking in the triple XP, I’ll always be behind him since I don’t have access to the 20% extra experience. So what am I doing to fill the gap? I’m glad you asked. The answer: PVP!

Today I spent a good chunk of time working on professions while I waited for my BGs to queue. I was at a fairly fun point to PvP because I am close to the top of my level tier; so while I won’t do AS well as someone toting a full character screen’s worth of BOA gear, I can still run around doing the DOT/Fear combo and get some kills. Here is how my first match went:

Good kill/death ratio, and top of Horde players. Nice!

At first glance, not too shabby. I’m in second place among all players, and first overall Horde side. But look down through and see how the other Horde Players did. Ouch. It was a solid ego-boost to be sure, but I’d rather be sitting in the middle amongst a good group of people, than looking down from my mountain of kills to see my friends rolling in the dust of a 3-10 kill/death ratio and an Alliance Win. Not fun for any of us (unless you happen to play Alliance of course).

At this point I pretty much just run around, dotting up everyone with my insta-cast abilities (Curse of Agony and Corruption), and should they close the gap, I’ll fear them away, throw down an Immolate and smile while my dots shred the life from them. It’s pretty much rinse and repeat from there. (Pro Tip —>) I don’t find Shadow Bolt to be a viable PvP ability right now, because it has too long of a casting time for a BG. I like to be mobile, and help with capping flags, or returning them. But hey, I’m only 18, and it’s only WSG. As I gain more abilites/talents I’m sure it’ll mix things up.

I spent a few more BGs with mixed results, as I’m still learning what works best for me, and how people react to the unfolding carnage. One thing I’ve found that helps a lot is to find other solid players. I don’t typically join a Battleground spamming how good I am- I let my play speak for itself. I look for others who are clearly after the objectives of the match, easily identified by the following actions: they go after flags; they don’t fight in useless middle-ground skirmishes; they make a b-lines for enemy flag carriers…. and I stick with them. If I see them headed somewhere, I’ll follow. If they are behind me, I’ll slow down and let them catch up. After all, 3 people assaulting an enemy rooftop teeming with Alliance dogs is better than a Warlock whose only company is his trusty Voidwalker.

My last BG of the day ended up a little like this:

This is more like it.

Exactly what I was talking about. I wasn’t first on kills, but check out my other stats: 2 flag caps, and 1 return, plus a decent k/d ratio. Results like these come from solid teamwork, focus on the BG objective and a little smack talk (even if they can’t hear my taunts…).

What’s next? I’m back to the bottom of the totem pole, as I’ve now leveled into my 20’s. I can’t complain though, because now I have new abilites, a new BG (Arathi Basin), and a MOUNT! Yes! No more blisters from all that damn running. I’m excited to see what kind of trouble I can get into with so many new things to explore. Once again, thanks for hanging out with me, and I’ll see you next time.
